A report examined the economic case for charitable giving to support early intervention in the lives of disadvantaged groups – including children with conduct/behavioural disorders, 'chaotic' families, and adults out of work due to mental health problems. It said that the savings from early intervention far exceeded the longer-term social costs of failing to intervene.

A study found that charitable giving was largely 'recession-proof': but there had also been no change in donations as a share of total household spending for more than 20 years. Households in 2008 gave 0.4 per cent of their spending to charity – exactly the same as they did in 1988.
